Raspberry Pi now available
The Raspberry Pi is a self-contained PC which can do many of the same things as your everyday computer, but for a fraction of the price—video processing, robotics, home automation, and more. It’s an Arduino on steroids, and it will unleash a global tidal wave of design creativity.

A credit-card sized computer designed to help teach children to code goes on general sale for the first time today.
The Raspberry Pi is a bare-bones, low-cost computer created by volunteers mostly drawn from academia and the UK tech industry.
Sold uncased without keyboard or monitor, the Pi has drawn interest from educators and enthusiasts.
Supporters hope the machines could help reverse a lack of programming skills in the UK.
“It has been six years in the making; the number of things that had to go right for this to happen is enormous. I couldn’t be more pleased,” said Eben Upton of the Raspberry Pi Foundation.
Massive demand for the computer has caused the website of one supplier, Premier Farnell, to crash due to heavy traffic.
The Raspberry Pi is available at either Premier Farnell or RS Components.
Apple Announce the Next iPad on March 7th [official]
The iPad 3 will be announced on March 7th. Apple has just sent out invitations for an Apple event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco at 10AM PST on Wednesday March 7th. The invitation not so subtly hints at the Retina Display becoming a reality in the iPad 3.
The next iPad has long been expected to be announced on March 7th with the hallmark feature of the “Retina Display”. The invitation, which notes that Apple has “something you really have to see. And touch” pretty much insinuates that a Retina Display iPad is happening.
iPad 3 Shipped – March 9 Launch
A shipping document revealed on a Chinese Web site apparently points to iPad 3 units leaving China for U.S. airports.
The iPad 3 could already be jetting its way to the United States.
The shipping document, revealed by Chinese forum site WeiPhone, allegedly details iPad 3 units hopping on board flights from China yesterday bound for airports in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City.
Translated by 9to5Mac, the report shows that initial deliveries from Apple supplier Foxconn to the U.S. will begin March 9. To no surprise, the shipments are said to be under tight security.
“In order to prevent the cargo from being dragged on the airport ramp for too long, as well as shortening the time the cargo stay on the airport ramp, we hereby require XXXX to schedule all the XXX cargo planes from Feb. 26 to Mar. 9. to XXX slot,” according to a translation of the shipping document offered by a Chinese-speaking 9to5Mac reader.
As always, such information is to be taken with a pinch of salt.
But if true, it would mean the iPad 3 is likely to debut in March but not in early March as previous reports had suggested.
March 9 has been rumored by some sources as the date that Apple might launch its latest tablet. But if the initial shipments won’t be delivered until that time, then we’d have to wait a bit longer for Apple’s iPad 3 event.
iPad 2S leak on Apple Website
Apple have accidently leaked an iPad 2S sales page on their website.
Well, we say “by accident” but we’re pretty sure it’ll just be another publicity stunt ready for the launch!
The owner of a Free iPhone website grabbed a screen shot of the Apple sales page before it was quickly removed.
We came across this tweet:
@StuffTV @T3MagUK @Gizmodo @engadget #Apple accidently leak #iPad2S on their website bit.ly/yI82DG bit.ly/xNjIWd #ipadrumours
— John (@QuickFree) February 24, 2012
The leaked Apple webpage shows that the next iPad will in fact be an iPad 2S, following in the footsteps of the iPhone 4S. It also seems that the price of the iPad 2S has been reduced by a further £10.
No news on a release date yet, but this mistake may show that it’s not far off.
iPad 3 launch – March 7th
Apple’s iPad 3 launch has been scheduled for March 7th 2012. Rumours suggest there will be an iPad 3 launch although there are just as many rumours suggesting an iPad 2S.
- San Francisco ‘special event’ to launch iPad 3
- Same size and shape as current iPad 2
- Will offer high-definition screen and Siri voice-activated personal assistant
- New apps being tweaked to work with faster A6 processor
- Seven-inch iPad ‘due later this year’, says analyst
iPad 3 Launch due in March
Apple looks set to continue the iPad March launch with it’s next iPad, presumably called iPad 3. The iPad 2, which launched last March 2nd and released on March 11th. Despite a wave of competitors, Apple continued to maintain a dominant position in the tablet market last year.
But the company faces even more competition this year, particularly from low-cost offerings from the likes of Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Asus.
The next iPad will look similar in design to the iPad 2, but run with a faster chip, an improved graphics processor, and better resolution, AllThingsD reported, citing anonymous sources. The tablet could also feature a 2048×1536 Retina Display, bringing its resolution in line with the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.
UPDATE 10.02.2012 – Getting the Apps ready.
Apple is reportedly in “crunch mode” as it completes last-minute preparations for the iPad 3 launch rumored to take place in the first week of March, lining up showcase apps to demonstrate on-stage and in subsequent advertising. That process has been accelerated, according to The Next Web‘s sources, with Apple apparently focusing on apps that demonstrate the third-gen tablet’s graphics prowess.
That comes as little surprise, given the most commonly leaked details about the upcoming tablet refresh are around its display and GPU abilities. While the first two iPad generations used a 1024 x 768 resolution display, Apple is tipped to have doubled that for the new model. That should add up to smoother, Retina Display style graphics and more detailed video playback.
Meanwhile, the graphics chip inside the iPad 3 is also said to have seen a significant boost, with Apple expected to use the new tablet to launch the A6 processor. Conflicting rumors have tipped the A6 as both a dualcore and a quadcore CPU, however.
Those apps that make Apple’s grade for the iPad launch event are also being considered for the inevitable big-budget ad campaign for the slate. The first advert is likely to be shown at the launch event itself, followed up with TV spots highlighting the newer features.

Foxconn preparing for iPhone 5 release

Bigger body, bigger screen, says factory insider
Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn is preparing its production lines for the iPhone 5, a company mole has claimed.
“The throat”, who previously told 9to5Mac at the end of summer 2011 that the iPhone 5 would not be launched in the near future, told the website that the new model will be longer and wider than the iPhone 4S, feature a new look and sport a screen that’s 4in or more in size.
There are a handful of samples kicking around, none of which the final version, but the characteristics listed above are common to all, (s)he said.
Of course, it’s clear that Foxconn has not yet told its Chinese factories to begin manufacturing the phone, so it’s impossible to use this snippet to forecast an iPhone 5 release date.
It’s suggested that the Foxconn mole’s whisper points to a June/July launch and release, but given the huge success of the iPhone 4S after its October launch, Apple may reasonably tempted to milk this one for more than six months.
We don’t think the iPhone 5 will be out until a year on from the 4S’ launch.
And if Apple has that much lead time, who can say how the design and specs are going to change over the next six months?
iBooks 2 at Apple Education Event

Apple’s education event was a reasonably small one, as Apple events go, held at the Guggenheim museum in New York City, with a smattering of media representatives in attendance. It arrives on the tail of some already hearty numbers for the company, including the existence of 20,000 learning-themed apps and 1.5 million iPads currently in use for education. But Cupertino’s plans for the future of learning are grand indeed, including the desire to “reinvent the textbook” via iBooks 2. And while our expectations weren’t particularly grand going into this morning, we were, indeed, pretty impressed with what we saw.
The event was the second prime appearance for Phil Schiller, senior VP of marketing at Apple, and marked a more enthusiastic and upbeat performance than the iPhone 4S launch that came just days after Apple founder Steve Jobs died in late 2011. As for the apps and services themselves, Apple is obviously trying to do for textbooks what has already done for digital music, offering publishers an easy way to get their interactive content into ebook form and on sale.
iBooks 2

The second coming of iBooks marks a much larger push toward education for Apple’s already crazy-popular tablet. Titles are already available in iTunes, priced at an attractive $14.99 and below — the size of the books is a little less appealing, however, ranging from 800MB to 2.77GB, at present, so you might want to pick up a few iPads to dump in your backpack. Apple’s point of view is clear: “With engaging layouts, interactive images, 3D graphics, and more, a Multi-Touch textbook on iPad is one book students won’t want to put down.”
iBooks Author

So, those fancy new textbooks are all well and good, but how are they actually made? iBooks Author, of course! This is an Apple product so the key here is ease-of-use, making it possible to simply drag-and-drop things like images, videos and Word files onto templates. Once you’re done, you can publish your book for free (pending Apple’s infamous approval process) and charge up to $14.99 for the thing. Oh, but you’ll need a Mac to use the iBooks Author App… but that’s no surprise!
iTunes U

Apple has already had a note of success with iTunes U, with more than 700 million downloads. The service, which has primarily been used to offer up lectures, is getting its own app. Dive in and you’ll get a syllabus, teacher bio and a course description and overview. You can get assignments here, bringing you to specific parts of your textbook. you can also keep tabs on homework and course material, and highlight and take notes on texts.
